What's blooming this week

Plants may be happier in their normal native conditions but they must have
a tolerance of extreme conditions, which may occur in their habitats
perhaps once in a thousand years or even once in ten thousand years.
Without survival mechanisms for extreme events in their habitats they would
become extinct.
As gardeners we can explore and exploit these tolerances.

Even though Gythio is probably zone 10 -- it is a seaside town of the
Peloponnese -- I collected seeds of several species there that are growing
in my Oregon garden, which experiences considerable frost.
I think many Mediterranean bulbs and other plants can
tolerate more cold than they normally experience in their native habitat.
This is also true of North American Pacific Coast bulbs and shrubs.
