Last year I planted in my back yard a one-gallon pot of Variegated Society Garlic, Tulbaghia violacea 'Variegata.' Today I had a big surprise...it survived the winter and is growing. I didn't expect it to survive; it wasn't even an experiment. My back yard is a postage stamp, bordered by a 6' high solid wood fence, and the plant is by a flagstone patio. Even with that, I can't justify my back yard being two or more zones warmer, else I'd be growing palms. Does this surprise anyone else? What really is the winter hardiness zone for this plant? --Jerry Lehmann, Olathe, KS, USA, zone 5
