For me cats are not practical. Apart from the potental damage to birds they get eaten, within a day or two, by coyotes. You probably don't have that part of the eco-chain to contend with. We do have bobcats but they go for larger rodents, rabbits, possums, skunks or even young racoons. Before you bring it up we do have snakes that help a bit but when rodent populations explode it's difficult. The owls have been the only effective measure I've found.
