My choices: Clivia miniata, blooming right now, and in lots of landscapes all over southern California. The orange Gladiolus dalenii, just the right color of orange for Halloween which is conveniently around the time it blooms for me. Hippeastrum puniceum from Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii, which is blooming right now and I've put a photo of it on the wiki. Kniphofia 'Christmas Cheer', blooms reliably in December each year and requires almost no care other than regular water. Narcissus 2O-O cultivars, I bloomed one that Steve Vinisky sent me and loved the soft orange perianth with the bright orange corona. I imagine there are better cultivars being bred, but I need one that will bloom reliably in southern Calif. and won't wash out too quickly in the sunshine. --Lee Poulsen Pasadena area, California, USDA Zone 9-10
