Regarding techniques to manage soil moisture, there are two elaborate chapters in the edited volume "Rock Garden Design and Construction" (Timber Press, 2003) devoted to this subject. In addition, the "regional" chapters in the book describe how soil moisture problems in different parts of North America can be addressed. I admit that I have an interest (editorial, not monetary) in sales of this book; however, I think it justifiable to recommend it to bulb growers, even if they have no interest in rock formations or alpine cushion plants.
