I planted some of this, probably from Jane, outdoors in a bed at the edge
of my woodland garden last autumn. I have not seen the plants above ground
since, but I'll wait for fall to come again.

I don't think you have to coddle this plant so much. I have it growing
outdoors, flowering and setting masses of seed, where winter temperatures
are probably about the same as at Arnold's place. It is very tolerant. The
foliage is winter-growing but withstands all kinds of frost, ice, snow, etc.
