Peter, I am inthe equivalent of Zone 10a here in Auckland, and Veltheimia do very well here. They thrive. I carefully planted my original one in part shade, but a seedling cameup in the full sun part of the garden, some years ago, this year had 3 flower heads, so is thriving too. Have never seen the striped look before though. I don't feed mine, just let them get on with it.
