Tulipa sprengeri was growing species tulips from seed

Thanks, Mary Sue - the Scottish Rock Garden Club takes its remit to share,
support, encourage and enthuse very seriously.

I would be happy to wait even seven years for T. sprengeri flowers
if, at the end
of the process, I had them in profusion and naturalising themselves in
the garden -
but , as with your experience - we have struggled to get this to happen.
Perhaps it makes me delight all the more in the "penny numbers" of
flowers that we have
but really I am terribly envious of our friends who have copious
quantities of these very elegant bulbs
blooming so happily in their gardens.
I try not to be jealous but I do think this is one of the nicest
tulips and when it does so well elsewhere
I just want to have hundreds of them.
I just LOVE this flower!
