Haemanthus Season (What Causes This?)

I have just had H. pubescens ssp. arenicolus flower here, right in the middle of a heatwave in Southern California. It is usually first to bloom.

I have to think it is either daylength-triggered, or simply pre-programmed since it has not received any water.
