I'm not too sure about Rodger's climate details, but Crinum survive all over Africa and some species survive in my back yard here in central Indiana. Heat is unlikely to present a problem to crinums; maybe Rodger's summers are not warm enough? Do narcissus bulb flies attack crinums as well? The most cold-hardy seem to be x-powellii, bulbispermum, and variabile. I'd suggest anyone try those three first. C. variabile makes the most compact plants of these three. If they survive, then you could branch out to rarer and more adventurous species and hybrids.
