Hello,
This is un interesting topic. For digging individual Crinums I made  two 
reinforced spades (steel  handle +cross brackets in the blade) which  are 
inserted either side of the bulb to "leverage it upwards. ( in the field I  
use a tractor with a horizontal blade).  As to   digging forks  I swear with 
the two english  marks "Spears & Jackson" and "Wilkinson"; they have the 
ideal angle and with 2-3 years of use no sign of the slightest deformation.

I have two different ones, a very heavy two bladed one which almost
looks like a halberd (hellebarde, a medieval weapon, too heavy for
ladies..... smile) which I use to uproot roots and the like and a
lighter one which I use for weeding.
I would not use either one to try to dig up deep or very deep bulbs as I
cannot really get down deep enough without destroying.
