Addendum to my last note: the practice of putting multiple cuttings in when you're producing herbaceous perennials works just fine for me. One local grower, Cavicchios, long ago won my heart by putting three or four plants into each large pot and then wholesaling them so cheaply that Stop and Shop can retail them for $9.99. Again, nothing fancy, but very nicely-grown and viable. Where it doesn't work is with woody plants. Who wants three scrawny one-sided rhododendrons in mismatched colors?
