Although most books of this kind are written in England for conditions
there (much milder than Massachusetts), those by Beth Chatto and
Penelope Hobhouse might be rewarding. As I recall, they don't deal much
with bulbs but concentrate on shrubs and perennials (i.e., mixed
borders).
Try Christopher Lloyd’s Flower Garden (not Garden Flowers; different book altogether). Pictures showing combinations, with lots and lots of bulbs.
As a person with no color or design sense I find looking at pictures to be more helpful than text describing these things.
