spring bulbs out in autumn in New Zealand
William R.P. Welch via pbs (Fri, 01 Jun 2018 08:59:47 PDT)

Under certain conditions these winter/early spring bloomers can bloom in the fall. They won't be expecting summer baking until that time, meanwhile they will stay green through winter and spring. Nothing to worry about!

Best wishes,

Hi Rosalind, I am in the Dandenongs, Victoria, Aus, about 1 degree of
latitude different to Auckland and here too the Autumn has been
exceptionally warm and dry, but I am probably higher in altitude so not
quite as advanced as you, would it be worth lifting half of your bulbs if
they start to die off and store dry, well away from rodents, until nest
planting season? Cheers Jocelyn.

Thank you for the suggestion, but alas no. These are all bulbs that have
been flowering only in spring for decades.

I've had that happen in my Sierra foothill garden in N. California.
However, it is usually the same batch that does that each year, blooming
about the end of Oct. which is still a month later in the season than yours.
Bill the Bulb Baron in Calif. sells early blooming strains, too, in case
these are new bulbs.

Is anyone else in Auckland, NZ encountering this? My first paper white

narcissi flowered on the 29th of March (!), followed by lots of others; then
the straw-yellow ones started, and today the first yellow and orange one has
come out. I am very worried about what will happen to them in the cold
sodden ground during the winter when they will be expecting to bake in the
summer heat. Any advice welcome.
