I would appreciate some advice on how to photograph plants with a
recently purchased small camera, a Nikon Coolpix S9700. I got it so I
wouldn't have to carry my heavy digital SLR on casual outings, but
attempts so far have resulted only in horribly overexposed images. It
doesn't come with a manual -- there are only online resources from which
I can't seem to extract the information I need. Does anyone have this
model of camera and know how to get a good image of a small plant
outdoors? I don't mean a true macro close-up, just a clear image of
something say 10 cm in diameter.

Some years ago I had an early Coolpix model and the main problem I had
with it was that the auto focus tried to focus on the background instead
of a small flower in the foreground. I eventually mastered it, though. I
really prefer the manual focus on the SLR but the lens is heavy.
