Also, I have what looks like a flat, horizontal iris in bloom now. About
24 inches tall, purple and white about 5 or 6 inches across. Any ideas?

Your flat iris is perhaps a Japanese iris, Iris ensata. Send some pictures
and we'll know for sure.
