Dear Mary Sue: Your method not only HAS to work, it had worked for decades. I wonder why it is not more widely used now. It was known as "Gladiolus culture" and basically involves giving the dormant bulbs, corms and tubers frost free to warm conditions while dry dormant in winter. In England it is common that the spot for this is under the bed of the spare (visitor's) room as it is generally warmer than a greenhouse in the open. The range of bulbous plants that can be grown under this method is very extensive.
