When I had a good planting of saffron (Crocus sativus) in the countryside in Oregon, a number of my neighbors were Mennonites with roots in Pennsylvania. An old couple who came by saw the plants in flower and were very eager to get some, as they remembered it from theirĀ youth. I hope theirs survived the voles. Today I braved my favorite food store -- an old building with narrow aisles -- to get a special treat, local lamb chops, from the best butcher shop in Portland. There, they keep the Spanish saffron in charming little glass pots with corks, locked in a glass-fronted cabinet that you have to ask the clerk to open. I keep it, like some other herbs, spices, and nuts, in the freezer.
