Help re membership etc
Lisa Meeker via pbs (Tue, 07 Jul 2020 07:29:47 PDT)

I THINK I am currently a member in good standing. But haven’t participated in exchanges and unclear on the concept. My questions are:
Am I current?
Would donation/contribution of Watsonia bulbs be appropriate
How do I know or anticipate when the next exchange will occur?

Thanks for your help
Lisa

Dear All,

Due to the delay in air mail during the COVID pandemic, my donation is
only offered now by Luminita.

I would like to comment on some of the items.

Some of the items need immediate attention on receipt: they are Begonia
martiana bulbili and Dioscorea tubers. They should still be viable but
must not be stored any longer: give them a soak in lukewarm water over
night and pot them the next day. The Begonia being Mexican has only
started to grow recently. Diosorea needs some bottom heat to start, its
growth cycle is rather long in autumn but it eventually goes completely
dormant in winter and must then be kept dry. A vigorous vine with
beautiful foliage.

All 3 Dahlia seed should not be sown in hot conditions, all come from
humid and moist montane forests. If you live in a comparable climate
they can be sown, they are all winter flowering and need a frost free
environment anyway. These seeds should be viable until this autumn or
next early spring. All three belong to the tree Dahlia group.

Tradescantia boliviana is NOT a creeper or a hanging basket plant but an
upright tuberous perennial. If sown immediately it may still produce a
reasonably sized plant, but I recomment keeping some of the seed till
next spring. It needs as much sun as possible, lots of water while
growing but must have a totally dry winter rest, otherwise the fleshy
roots will rot. A magnificent long flowering plant with pink flowers
loved by insects.

Seed of the two Zantedeschias is best kept until? spring next spring.
They are summer growers and may not be able to form a tuber big enough
to survive the first dormancy. Z. jucuda is a magnificent bright yellow
with spotted leaves and Z. albomaculata is an elegant white flowerd with
arrow shaped pretty leaves, also spotted, originally from Ellen Hornig,
thank you, Ellen!

Hope that helps!

Bye for now

Uli

Dear friends;

I donated 2 items

15. Crinum bulbispermum ex ?Jumbo?. see instructions

I gave info on starting these seeds on July 5 in a message entitlled ?Crinums in bloom?. Seeds need to be started soon as they have a short shelf lfe and may already be germinating.

1. Euphorbia decarii

spelling Euphorbia decaryi. This is a stoloniferous plant that rarely gets more than 2 -3 inches tall, but creeps on top and under the gritty soil in bright sun. I donated plants a few year before as Euphobia ?sp. ?Nova? when its identiy was less fixed. Easy if frost free.

Best Jim

The Major Thing I Did Today
I divided the large pot of crinum. I knew this would be a (apologies to
female dogs) b*tch of a job. It involved setting up work area over by
tool shed. Wrestling crinum and offsets out of a 13 inch diameter pot.
As I thought the soil was a solid mass of roots. It took two spading
forks back to back to start prying the smaller offsets away from each other.

Took the second largest crinum bulb down to tropical garden at the
bottom of the driveway and planted it. Severe root damage. It was
planted very deeply, watered in stages - first when set in hole, then
when partially back-filled, and finally after filling and mulching. It
is supposed to rain this afternoon, again tomorrow, and also on
Wednesday. I set a tall plastic garbage can with no top or bottom over
it (looks like a very large cylinder) for some protection against
transplant shock. It might winter over. We shall see.

Pried largest bulb - the one with with pseudostem and whirligig of
leaves 3 feet high - free of entanglements and potted in a different,
nicer pot. Potted seven smaller divisions. They had better find new
homes before winter because there is simply no room in the greenhouse
for them.

And now - right now I am drinking a large mug of yesterday's solar tea
with the last of the limeade concentrate (made lemonade concentrate
yesterday) while the sweat dries and the acetaminophen kicks in. Then I
shall shower and go soak my head. After which I will wash bluejeans.
There's enough dirt on this pair that they could possible stand up on
their own.

roof reports? current temperature of 96.3 degrees Fahrenheit

Jane,
When I cut and pasted the items I wanted as Luminita asked, it suggested
the correct spellings!
