Friends, Coincidentally I just started 'The Invention of Nature’ about Alexander Von Humboldt. The author claims he has more ’things’ named for him than any other person - places, statues, animals, plants, etc. He was famous world wide in his day. https://amazon.com/Invention-Nature-Alexander-Humb… Enjoy Jim On Jul 4, 2020, at 9:39 AM, Jim McKenney via pbs <pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net> wrote: Ken's photos of Lilium humbodtii have me giving new interest in this species. I decided to check the wikipedia entry for this plant and learned something: wikipedia includes Baja California in the range of this plant. Old books took it right down to the southern border of the US, but until today I don't think I've ever seen definite references to Mexican populations. Great! Now if someone could only cite definite sightings of the Imperial Woodpecker there. Today's Washington Post (pp E8-9) has a fascinating full double page spread on an upcoming Smithsonian exhibit celebrating the life of Alexander von Humboldt. He's the eponym for the lily. His was a long and fascinating life; as a young Prussian aristocrat visiting the US he befriended Thomas Jefferson with whom he maintained a life-long friendship.Jim McKenney _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net http://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/… Dr. James Waddick 8871 NW Brostrom Rd Kansas City, MO 64152-2711 USA Phone 816-746-1949 _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net http://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/…
