Dear PBS, I have grown saffron outdoors in partial shade for well over a decade in Zone 5 Kansas City. My original bulbs came from a commercial saffron business in SE Pennsylvania. If I keep on top of things they provide enough saffron spice that I have not bought any for the decade. Freshly dried is INTENSE. They have survived temps from below 0F to near 110 F with no extra care. I keep thinking I should dig, divide and spread for increased production, but that IS WORK. They are trouble free except for picking the precious stamens, drying and storing. Jim W. If so, I think you should tell everyone about that and also tell about the saffron cultivation in SE PA. I think it's an amazing story. Thanks for doing this. I hope I'm lucky and get a couple when they are offered.
