Yes, and that reliance is complimentary in terms of producing anything useful. Field work is helped along by herbarium studies and monographs and so forth, leading to more productive field work. Otherwise we have piles of dead sticks that serve no purpose. No one makes fun of medical sample taking but for some reason gardeners never tire of throwing stones at botanists who make specimens. What do they think is the basis for naming plants and understanding their relationships? It can't all be field work ...
