Snowmelt bulbs

I don't know the frost line for far northern Chile, but there is snow at
this elevation at least 200 km north of Santiago, and the Santiago ski
areas feel like they're below 10,000 ft. (i.e., I don't get out of
breath walking around there).

In Peru 10,000 feet is often below the zone where frost occurs. It gets very cool, though. I don't know about Chile.
