That's what I do - put up a board in the front of the pots. Easy and effective. In some places I put a row of bricks (2 or 3 high). Bricks look nice. Won't blow over and in an alternating pattern can do nice curves. Some feature pots I put among a ground cover or low-ish plants in the garden. The plants cover and shade the pots. Some I have trailing succulents, such as ice plant, in the same pot with bulbs. The succulent doesn't seem to be much competition and trails over the edge of the pot. It can be spotty though in it's coverage.
