Not deer so much (though they are a problem when they get inside the fence) but rather rabbits are a huge problem for the garden. Once the plants get big enough to not be so tasty, they can pull the cages. I love that garden and we go as often as we can. One think I was remembering of Santa Cruz is the ugliness of the many cages that were placed over seedlings, small shrubs, etc. They said their main problem then was deer and the only resource was to use those expensive looking cages. Fortunately their many different Proteas were not caged.
