Hi Mel,
I use vinegar, and just put it on with a small paint brush. Then pull the dead liverworts out with tweezers. Bit of a long process. but if you are only sowing small amounts ,worth the effort.

Yes I have gone back to fine gravel, never used to have problems, but someone recommended it as good , but I don't like it.
