Enthusiasts in the USA and Canada should consider joining the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS, http://www.nargs.org/). The Alpine Garden Society (England) is also very interesting. These groups generally do not cater to growers exclusively of tender plants, but they run massive seed exchanges annually and have attractive quarterly journals. Their plant coverage is not restricted to rock and alpine species; in fact, it seems that the fastest growing groups of NARGS members is in the Midwest. The AGS includes many people who grow their collections in alpine houses (minimally heated greenhouses).
