Growing medium

David,
I also live in a winter rainy climate, and my mix is
1 part compost
1 part cocopeat
2 parts pumice.

Drainage is most important. I NEVER use sand. In a dark, wet
climate, sand traps moisture in the mix. I learned this from a well
know Alpine Nursery grower, and it seems to work.

Hi David,

I use a mix of course sand (used by bricklayers), pumice (1-5 mm)
stonechippings (1-5 mm) and cocopeat.
And my results are good.

2 parts course sand
2 parts pumice
2 parts stone chippings
1 part coco peat

For the more sensitive species I leave the coco peat out.
I never use peat or peat based soil.

At least make sure the soil is well drained.

For Cyrtanthus and similar species I use the floating method with very
good results.

Kind regards,

Hi Guys,

I'd like to ask everyone what they think is the best medium to germinate
and grow cape bulb seedlings? I know this probably differs a lot from
person to person, and possibly from species to species, but I'm looking
for a good mix to use for all my seeds that germinate outside in the cape
winter weather (cold and rainy.) I've been using a mixture of 1:1:1
peat:///perlite:sand/ with a thin layer of coarse grit (5mm) on top which has
been pretty successful, but I am sure there is a wealth of experience and
knowledge on this topic, which is why I posted this.

Thanks all,
David.
