I recently (FINALLY) managed to get my hands on a Drimia (Schizobasis) intricata that isn't the Chuck Hanson collection from S of Jansenville, Eastern Cape. Nearly every specimen of this species (if it is indeed "a" species) in cultivation is from these plants, at leadt here in the States, though one can occasionally run into what is called the "Tanzanian form." I imagine most of you are familiar with it. The new bulbs I recieved are derived from plants collected near the Klipwal diamond mind, quite a bit N of the Jansenville locality. The cliffs are also home to a well-known clone of the popular Gasteria batesiana. The bulbs themself are somewhat different in appearance, having a more typical "drimia" look. The inflorescence is stiffer, taller and strongly paniculate. But the flowers were the real surprise - see the attached image. They are campanulate, or nearly so, and unlike the Jansenville plants, whose flowers open only for a few hours late afternoon/early evening, these are open by morning and appear to last nearly two days. I hope they self as easily as the Jansenville plants...
