They will bloom the second year if I remember correctly -- awfully soon
for a plant that grows a big tuber.
The Sonoran Desert yellow morning glory Merremia aurea is like that as
well. I have been startled by how big a tuber it can make during its first
summer with only 5 or 6 small leaves.
