Sternbergia question

Angelo wrote,in these days Sternbergia candida is blooming. last year it
did for the
first time and the flower was small. I though the bulb wasn't enough strong
yet, but this year it looks quite good. The flowers are small however. Isn't
this species described as large flowered and also scented ?? Mine has none
of these attributes.
I grew S. candida from seed and it has been flowering for about 4 years
now. The flowers seem to be larger each year, as the bulbs gain size. It is
faintly scented but you have to sniff it, and in cold conditions the scent
may not be apparent. I hand-pollinated the flowers but it may be too cold
for fertilization to take place, even in the bulb frame.
So don't give up on it, Angelo, just feed it well and it will give you
bigger flowers next year!
