Is it normal to leave the dead / dry leaves? If so, for what reason? I'm
curious.

As a safety reminder for people living in California, don't forget to
clean up your dead, flammable Amaryllis belladonna leaves from last
winter. The current flowers are very fragrant but no match for all
the ongoing smoke.

This is a screen shot from last night's local news showing a border
of flowering Amaryllis with their spent leaves catching on fire in
the lower left corner.
