Hyacinthoides lingulata comes in two subspecies, the type and ssp. ciliolata. I have both and find that they flower at slightly different times, and I think ssp. ciliolata is a bit more cold-hardy. I grow both in an unheated greenhouse. This is a little plant, very good in a pot, but in Santa Barbara where Gastil lives it would be a good garden subject too. The flowering stems lengthen as they mature. The foliage stays green through winter, but if it freezes off, the bulbs generally survive. The blue color is very pretty.

Today I repotted some Hyacinthoides lingulata. There were already lots of
roots and the shoots were fat and already half an inch high, within a
couple inches of the surface. I was able to repot them gently but it would
have been easier a couple weeks ago. This species multiplies well and
blooms reliably but my blooms are always very short, barely emerging. I
suspect if I began watering earlier I might get taller stalks.
