Wildlife damage recovery

Are the gates intentionally being propped open by the neighbors so the deer will go in and eat there rather than in their yards? A rather tacky move if that’s the case.

Yes, that what we have on the driveway entering the reserve.
But there are a number of other gates around the reserve that we've found propped open at times.

Can a cattle guard be installed on the gateway, Arnold? Deer won't cross it.

We installed a deer exclosure fence to allow the forest to mature naturally. The deer were influencing the habitat by removing any young growth that provided habitat for many birds and other creatures.
We had a consultant from Rutgers University who are the host of the State Cooperative Extension Service.
We did get some blow back from neighbors who felt that the fence was pushing the deer onto their property.
Our consultant stated that deer have 3-5 mile walk and rarely stay in one location for more than 1/2 day.
So far the fence has worked out well.
Biggest problem is the neighbors are propping open the gates to let the deer in to the Nature Center.

" If you have a country property that is fenced to keep dogs in (as I did
for many years), and if the dogs are large and predatory, deer will stay
out."
Jane,
Not more than 60 seconds ago a beautiful mature doe (she had twins last
season) sauntered across our unfenced 20+ acre field maybe 100 feet past
the veggie garden and small orchard. Ever watchful, Fred the Giant
Schnauzer gave his deer specific warning from inside the house and the doe
pranced into the swamp. We have a 1500 square foot fenced-in run off of the
kitchen door for the beastie; his bark keeps the riff-raff away.
Best,

Deer are so well fed in our gardens, here in the Garden State of New
Jersey, that only the first year do does have a single fawn. After that,
twins are common, even - occasionally - triplets.

That has not been my experience in Perquimans County where there is no

NJ has a bow season, shotgun with solid slug, a sabot, and black

We have a hunter who uses a black powder gun. He gets one or two deer
off our property each year. We are gifted back strap, roast, etc.
I still, almost every day, see a group of 5 deer on their
peregrinations. But it is with pleasure that we eat delicious locavore
free range venison.

They don’t manage to keep our deer in check, though. When I was
young, about 1945, we used to make special trips to see deer in the
forest. I don’t know what encouraged them to overrun our cities.

Diane,
What encourages deer to overrun our cities is nonsensical hunting
regulations which allow them to overpopulate. I am not a hunter and I
do not own a gun; so I am not a gun rights fanatic.
