Wachendorfia

Silverhill has several species, but only Wachendorfia thyrsiflora grows in
swampy conditions year round. I have grown W. paniculata in the past. It
and the rest of the Wachendorfia are winter growers, blooming in spring and
then go dormant for the summer.

Hello Nan,
I have once managed to grow Wachendorfia from seed which I got from a
source which no longer exists, unfortunately.
The seed germinated beautifully and the plants grew nicely after an autumn
sowing but I lost one after the other during summer. I never understood why
I lost them.
I can tell they are swamp plants so the amount of rain you have will not
be enough to grow them in the open garden without irrigation. I think they
grow wet year round and do not have a dry dormancy like for example
Zantedeschia aethiopica.
Unfortunately I am not able to tell you a source of seed.
Bye for now
Uli
I just watched a presentation of a GORGEOUS garden in South Africa with
many glorious Wachendorfia - I don't know which species but it made me
curious about testing it in my Southern California garden. Can anyone tell
me if there are Wachendorfia that will tolerate just 9 or 10" of rainfall
in a year? And does anyone know a source in California - Southern
California preferably.
Thank you
Nan Sterman
