Cyclamen persicum and others are native here in Israel. We have a typical wet winter and dry summer. Cyclamen is often seen growing in cracks or depressions in rocks - the kind of place you would expect sedums or other succulents to grow. Not much soil. I should add that, personally, I think dew is a bigger factor than usually given credit for in dry summer survival.
