I don't know what other effects this would have but might be worth a go. The Biological Imaging Facility at UC Berkeley has a custom tweaked microwave that could heat samples to certain temperatures. Since microwaves heat samples much quicker and deeper than an oven, I think it would drastically reduce the amount of time necessary to treat the bulbs.
