I have what I assume is Scadoxus multiflorus ssp. katherinae- bought as
dried bulbs at a garden center many years ago. They have multiplied
somewhat but never as much as I would like of course. They're potted in a
12in azalea pot which they have filled. In the fall when hard freezes are
predicted(Nov-Dec) I simply take the pot in a frost free shed and forget
about them- they bloom every year.
Interestingly, a couple years ago, due to illness, I forgot to bring them
out that year. I thought they would be dead for sure but I was wrong!
Completely dry for over a whole year but when watered they soon took off and
flowered like nothing had happened! Simply amazing.

For several years I've been growing various species of Scadoxus in my
window sill here in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Every year in august Scadoxus multiflorus ssp. katherinae is flowering.
Compared to Scadoxus multiflorus which should be much easier to grow
compared to price and availability - it's much more trickier.?
I've been told from other growers that they have exactly the same
problems. I was wondering if anyone has got any suggestions what to do.
Does it need a period of cooler temperature, less water - whatever?
One last thing, I would like to buy seeds of Scadoxus cyrthanthiflorus but
don't know any growers.

In Zambia, S. multiflorus is dormant for between April and November where
it's completely dry except for the possibility of a rare rainfall. In that
time, April to mid August is cool and dry while late August to November is
hot and dry. Maybe trying to replicate such conditions will help with the
flowering?

Cheers,

Nick

Nick,
That sounds interesting. When you say that your climate is cool during
these 4-5 month how cool is that?
I remember that I had it flowering years ago - maybe I have been to kind
by watering the plant now and then in wintertime.
Regards
?
Anders?

Anders, here in Maryland. where summertime day temperatures regularly go
over 32 degrees C (in July 1936 it reached 43 degrees C!); there are on
average about 30 days per year when the temperature is at or over 32
degrees C. Not only is it hot, it is humid. Not, I think, like Denmark.

Scadoxus multiflorus multiflorus grows well and easily here. My plants
have been in the same pot for years. During the frost free season, the pot
is placed in a dish of water and left out in the sun. I try to remember to
keep water in the dish at all times. ?Some years I throw in some granular
fertilizer. In the autumn, I keep a watch out for night frosts and bring
the pot in for that night if they occur. Otherwise, the pot stays outside
until the foliage ripens sometime in early November. Then the pot comes
inside and spends the winter dry in the heated basement. In April or May
it goes outside again to repeat the cycle.?

The soil used is a heavy loam.?

Other than that, it gets no special care. And the pot has bloomed every
year, some years more abundantly than others.?

Jim McKenney
Montgomery County, Maryland, USA, USDA zone 7, where the tree Davidia
involucrata has about a thousand flowers now, tulips are at their height
and the first tree peonies are in bloom.?
