Hi Jim, The large trunk belongs to one of my Aloe X'Hercules' hybrids (now Aloidendron .. I have 5 specimens the oldest nearing 20 years) so they do have some A.barberae heritage but are much more robust, faster growing and reportedly more cold tolerant. I did create a raised bed of my amended native clay soil, topped with 4-8 inches of DG, atop which I planted the Boophones. The rocks were placed loosely around the bulbs afterwards with an effort to allow air around the exposed above-ground part of the bulbs, which for me tends to be 1/2 - 1/3 of the bulb. Did you originally plant them that high on the rocks? Mine will be up in flower in another few weeks.
