When in South Africa a couple of years ago I saw Ferraria crispa growing in the wild, and flowering in early September (the start of spring). It was in the Western Cape, which has predictably cool, damp winters, and warm to hot dry summers, when the Ferraria would be dormant. If trying to grow the plant in Melbourne I would have to put it under cover in summer to avoid any summer rain. I hope my comments are of some use.
