As Jane says, Hippeastrum equestre is "a species that was ...early to be recognized...".In fact, it seems to have been known in Europe roughly a century and a half before the time of Dean Herbert and roughly a century before the time of Linnaeus. Can anyone tell us who the first botanist was who first used the name equestre (or more likely, equestris) for this plant? Perhaps that person left some information with regard to its intended meaning. I won't have time to do the search until late next week.
