Sinningia tubiflora
ERIKA SCHROEDERSECKER via pbs (Sat, 03 Jul 2021 19:19:27 PDT)

Hi Rimmer,

Beautiful display of Sinningia tubiflora. I’m envious you can grow it to perfection outdoors. Next Summer I will grow my young plants outdoors for the Summer.

Best of luck on your entry for the Gesneriad Convention virtual show.

First photo is of a plant left in ground all winter. The second photo was a huge tuber (originally from Dell) dig and stored in sand in garage.

Starting to bloom now for the 4th year on 14 year-old bulbs, Boophone haemanthoides,? in San Diego,? California.? A bulb which began to bifurcate last year seems to be abstaining from blooming.

These aurelians are so very far removed from the straight species.
L.henryi was crossed with L lucanthum in the 1920s in Orleans France. Hence the name Aurelians. You can find photos of many great Aurelians in the old prewar Scheepers catalogues and post war Oregon Bulb Farms listings. White Henryi is a famous on that survived from that time. Bright Star is an other.

Recently people working with aurelians have added L rosthornii to the mix to get black hearts. Though Leslie Woodruff hybridized Blackheart White BHW by the 1960s long before L rosthornii was known. I have worked with seedlings from BHW and sometimes you get a nice black heart. (Red over green in the nectary) or a red heart red over white.

I am looking for all white, green or yellow semi recurved henryi type form with thick papallae and a blackheart on long pedicels, with secondary blooms, and good bloom spacing- something like the last 2 photos of my Sol Verde seedling from 2011 all grown up now at 9 feet tall.

Why work with species when these fertile diploid hybrids are dozens of generations ?improved?. You get better results standing on the shoulders of those who came before.

I have sent my Aurelian seeds to the BX in the past.

?Very impressive, Rimmer. Are you using L. henryii as the pod-parent and the hybrids as the pollen-parent, or are flowers you showed from crosses either way? L. leucanthum is starting to flower for me now, but my L. henryii are still a few weeks out. I hope one day to have some crosses like yours!

Sinningia tubiflora grows and flowers well in a large pot here in the low desert in full heat and full sun all day. It is not harmed in the least by full sun with temperatures to 118 F / 48C. It needs plenty of water when in leaf. I've heard from many people who have reported trouble flowering it in smaller containers, or in other than full sun. Often I can't convince people to try a larger pot, plus full sun.

I haven't tried it in the ground because my soil isn't soil, its fist-sized rocks separated by dust. I don't want to put it into a raised bed for fear of it taking over.

Of interest, years ago Alberto Castillo in Argentina wrote to me that the species forms a solitary tuber in habitat. This has not been my experience, nor that of others. Here it forms very numerous tubers almost to the size of small hen's eggs.

These things are all so very cool and impressive.? From the viewpoint of a rank ignoramus, can anyone tell me what is the presumed biological purpose of the papillae?? Seems like whatever is doing the pollinating wouldn't interact with those structures.? Are they associated with scent glands?

Robin,

I don't think your Lilium davidii is var. unicolor which has few, if any,
spots & wider tepals.

Attached is an image of a Lilium davidii var. unicolor from some years back.

Unfortunately, it refuses to grow in Yuma, despite repeated attempts. It could be because our nights don't cool off from July through September. Sinningia tubiflora did wonderfully for me elsewhere.

Fascinating to see these. I notice that some have a lot of those fleshy ragged-looking outgrowths on the petals and sepals. Do those have a name and do they have a function? I guess it's a genetic trait of some species?
