Strelitziaceae is a small family of the order Zingiberales with 3 genera and 7 species which occur throughout the southern hemisphere. The genus Strelitzia contains 5 species occurring in southern Africa. The genus Ravenala contains a single species, Ravenala madagascariensis, which occurs in Madagascar. The genus Phenakospermum contains a single species, Phenakospermum guianense, which occurs in northern South America. Plants are medium to giant herbs with distichous leaves. Roots are rhizomatous. Many species in this family are grown for their form and foliage rather than the mostly dull flowers which are pollinated mostly by birds and bats.
