Paeoniaceae is a family consisting of mostly shrubs or perennial herbs which occur in NW Africa, temperate Asia and Europe, and Western North America. The family contains only one genus, Paeonia with about 30 species. Underground structures are in the form of rhizomes. Flowers are often very ornamental.
