Cyanixia is a cormous genus in the Iridaceae family with only one species. It is a member of the Watsonieae tribe. For more information consult The Iris Family: Natural History and Classification.
Cyanixia socotrana (Hook.f.) Goldblatt & J.C.Manning is endemic to the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean, part of the Republic of Yemen. It was originally thought to belong to the genus Babiana as Babiana socotrana Hook.f., but Goldblatt et. al. in 2004, placed it in a new genus. It has axillary corms (unlike Babiana which has terminal corms), sword shaped to lanceolate lightly pleated leaves, and radially symmetric long-lived blue flowers with exserted anthers. Height range: 12-30 cm. Photos from iNaturalist were taken by James Bailey December 2024 and shared under a CC BY-NC license.
