Alan Horstmann

Alan Horstmann is an active member of IBSA (Indigenous Bulb Association of South Africa) and lives in Brackenfell, South Africa. He has contributed many of his photos to the pbs wiki and is a frequent contributor to iNaturalist. He has a long history of sowing seed and growing bulbs and corms. For a number of years after 1993 he operated Rust-en-Vrede Nursery and sold seeds and bulbs. He enjoys taking close-up photography of geophytes and South African succulents and often gives talks illustrated by his photographs at IBSA meetings and symposiums. In 2026 he gave a talk to IBSA entitled Every Picture Tells a Story. You can see it on YouTube here. In the IBSA newsletter it was described as: "The pictures come from travels spanning the bulb hotspots and everything else in between. These are regions of the winter rainfall regions of the Western and northern Cape, many of them drier places. He has visited these places frequently over a number of years. The seasons cover spring and autumn and everything in between; early spring, early winter. Over that time, he has accumulated not only the many picture records but so much knowledge about the plants and the veld they are part of." It is 41 minutes with music.
