Yes, in Massachusetts I spend time on my knees praying that things will grow. Here in Mexico, the machete is the only answer. The basic rules seem to be the same, though: drainage, and if it grows well in your neighbor's garden, it will grow in yours. You can't imagine how many years it took me to realize it was about that simple. Of course, I'm not trying to make Chlidanthus or Typhonium flower. Shy performers here are probably eaten by the heliconias or by the leafcutter ants.
