My guess is that there was very little understanding of the horticultural needs of the bulbs Purdy sold and that nearly all of them perished. There's a story that some were included as prizes in boxes of cereal (from the Wayne Roderick interview on file at UC Berkeley, I believe), which goes to show how likely they were actually successful in gardens.
