Hippeastrum Propagation

Hi Bob,
One thing that has worked for me is to bisect the bulb, saving the larger
half to plant (after treating with fungicide) and chipping the smaller
portion. The chipping protocol also involves fungicide.
The main advantage is you will likely get a bloom to pollinate from the
larger half without skipping a season, but you still have the same risk as
with chips alone regarding infection. I would leave the roots on the half
you don't chip. I wouldn't risk twin-scaling alone until you get good
results from chipping.
Another protocol I saw involves less trauma. Remove the roots and do a
tic-tac-toe saw cut through the basal plate up into the scales a fraction
of an inch and set the bulb on its side in a dark place. Bulblets will
appear in each segment over time.
Hope this helps,
Tim

Does anyone have a recommendation for vegetative propagation of
Hippeastrum? In this case it is important to have a method that doesn't
risk losing the entire plant, so I prefer not to dice up the whole bulb and
hope the chips survive. I don't think leaf props work as easily as in
Eucomis, if at all, but ideally some sort of tissue culture using leaves
would be preferred. I'm prepared to do sterile culture if someone has any
experience with the medium and protocols that work for Hipps. I plan to
dig around in the literature but if someone is already experienced in this,
I'm all ears. Thanks!
