I’m excited! 2 seed pods on my Gladiolus liliaceus have ripened and opened to reveal a really good seed set. I pollinated all 6 flowers with pollen from G. watermeyeri because I thought I read they were both in Hebea, but i was mistaken. According to Saunders, they’re in different sections. Only 2 of the 6 flowers set seed. To be fair, the pollen was sparse, refrigerated (properly), and desiccated (only a month old). I have 2 corms of G. liliaceus that i believe are genetically identical, so I did not do anything with the G. liliaceus pollen. Blooming occurred during pretty gross weather, so I doubt there were any pollinators out. Do Gladiolus sections easily hybridize? Or has this just become a mystery? Thanks!
